Marshall is the second, behind Aaron Smith, highest capped scrum half in All Blacks history. He has scored a record 24 test tries for New Zealand, a tally that more than doubles the next best for an All Blacks scrum half, held by Sid Going.

He had planned to follow his Dad and take up a career in the media but, when offered a job as a studio audience warm up man at HTV Wales, took a year out from university to pursue his childhood ambition of becoming a professional comedian. Mike joined the military at the age of 18 and in 2011 while at longmoor training area broke his leg and while in hospital contracted an infection. After 2 years and 30 operations Mike had to make the choice to amputate his left leg.
