June 16th 2023 saw the first ever Great Days Golf Singles Open at The Grove Golf Club in Porthcawl. 92 golfers gathered to play 18 holes and compete for the now coveted ‘Gold’ Jacket and trophy with the day sponsored by Premium Partner RNA Plant Ltd and owner Neil Armstrong.
Paul Nash ran out winner of the title with a Nearest The Pin birdie on his last hole – the Par 3 fourth hole – securing a one point win. Paul said “I’m thrilled to be the first winner of the GDG Singles Open and delighted that the jacket fits me perfectly! It’s been a great day and the course was in excellent condition. The atmosphere at the event has been really warm and good fun. I’ll be back next year to defend my title for sure!”
Playing with Neil Armstrong in the RNA fourball was former Grand Slam winning coach Mike Ruddock and the day was also attended by former British & Irish Lions hooker Richard Hibbard who was promoting his new brand of rum – Mortal Bunny and Sand Rabbit – by supplying all golfers with a taster of his products on the 18th green. There were a wide range of abilities and ages competing at the event and this further signifies Great Days Golf’s strapline “Bringing Golfers Together”. Cheryl Griffiths from Neath Golf Club commented:- “This is the third Great Days Golf event we have been to and the first Singles event. We played as a fourball but it was a nice change to have a Singles event. Each event has been different but they have all been brilliant and we have a great time. GDG does what it says on the tin right from the moment you walk through the door, pick up your goody bag and you are welcomed by the superb staff. We can’t wait for the next one!”
